Another key thing to remember about Ambien is that it does not mix well with alcohol – something that some reports say that Tiger Woods had been drinking on the day of his accident. Since Ambien is a sleeping pill, consuming alcohol and taking Ambien at the same time can be dangerous since it can increase the sedative effect of the pill.

Apart from the dangerous consequences that irresponsible alcohol consumption can bring – the most common and most deadly of which are fatal vehicular accidents that involve drunk drivers – young Americans should be made aware that alcohol itself can kill. Binge drinking – which is defined as consuming more than 5 drinks of alcohol within a two-hour period for men or more than 4 drinks in that time frame for women – can lead to a condition called alcohol poisoning.
Consumption of alcohol results in the depression of nerves that control such involuntary actions as breathing and the gag reflex, which prevents choking. Indiscriminate alcohol intake will eventually lead to the cessation of these functions altogether.
Debbie Allen’s daughter Shelby Lyn was 17 when she died after drinking with a couple of friends December of last year. She has since founded the Shelby Lyn Allen Alcohol Poisoning Education Foundation, and she goes about sharing her story and educating people about the dangers of alcohol poisoning.
Education will be very necessary – but extremely difficult. It is said that hard liquor has replaced beer as the drink that teenagers turn to. In reality, they should not be reaching for anything, beer or otherwise, just yet. Dissuading teenagers can be a rather gargantuan task, partly because anti-alcohol consumption advocate’s competition comes in the form of sophisticated television series that show snooty high school girls in frilly pajamas and tiaras sipping vodka martinis and munching on olives. Who can compete with that? It may actually take a lot of time and effort, but we actually can – and should.

A feature on the New York Times hails the advantage of using hair samples as opposed to urine samples during drug testing.
The title says it all: the hair cannot lie — at least as far as drug testing is concerned.
Since the 1980s, a drug test has been a standard part of the job application process, as well as the process of staying employed. More than just that, it has crept into many other standard practices not just in the United States but the rest of the world; there are countries that incorporate drug testing into several application processes, such as that of applying for a driver’s license.
According to the New York Times article, the practice of drug testing has reportedly led to a decline in the number of people who test positive for drug use over the years. But then again, that may be due to the fact that people can generally prepare for such tests. What that basically means is that a decline in positive results may not necessarily mean a decline in drug use among employees in general.
The usual method that is employed in testing for drug use is the submission of urine samples. Although this method has already led to the identification of drug use, the testing involved in urine specimens only have the ability to “detect a single instance of drug use in the prior one to three days”. This limitation of the procedure provides a window of opportunity for drug users to cheat the system by physically preparing themselves for a test; they can simply temporarily lay off the habit for a moment – just enough to be able to test negative – and then go on their old merry way, at least until the next wave of tests.
Hair samples, on the other hand, hold much more information. Hair testing can “detect a pattern of repetitive use over a period of up to 90 days”, which means a spur-of-the-moment resolution is out of the question and will not be able to yield favorable results.

COLORADO SPRINGS - One of the toughest tests your kids could face this school year may not even take place in the classroom. An FDA approved home drug test is on the market and being advertised on radio. The "First Check" Home Drug Test tests for seven different illegal drugs (marijuana, cocaine, opiates, methamphetamine, ecstasy, amphetamines and PCP) and five prescription drugs (tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, methadone and oxycodone).
Essentially, you get a urine sample in a cup, put the test lid on and rest the cup on its side (which rests on legs). There are indicators on the lid for each drug. After five minutes, if a line appears within the indicator, the test is negative for that specific drug. If a line does not appear, the test result is positive. If you get a positive result, an envelope is provided so you can mail the sample to a "First Check" lab for a free follow-up test.
"I guess if I had a kid who's had problem with drugs, I would probably resort to using something like this," said parent Kitsen Goldberg. "It's a parent's right."
Goldberg is the mother of three boys (ages 22, 19 and 15). She says she's never suspected them of drug use, but would consider an at-home drug test.
"I guess I would try it. I wouldn't totally trust it, but I would try it," said Goldberg. "They'd be mad, but they'd get over it."
On the side of the drug test box is a list of the drugs that can be detected, as well as street names for those drugs.
"I didn't know that marijuana was called bud or hydro or zig zag. I've never heard cocaine called racehorse or yeyo or nachos. I didn't know that amphetamines were black beauties or beanies, I think I'm pretty naïve when it comes to drugs," said Goldberg. "See, your kids could be talking about things that they're just doing everyday and you don't even know what they're talking about."
"It's kind of sad, and if this is what we have to do to step up as parents, then I'm for it," said parent Jodi McConnell. "If you drop the ball somewhere along the line, then this is a great opportunity to figure it out."
McConnell has two kids, a 12-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter. Her daughter is high school junior and on the cheerleading squad.
"Her and I have actually discussed it and she thinks it's a great idea to actually test teams," said McConnell. "I think she'd be okay with it. I think she would want me to know and be reassured that she's not."
"I think it's a great idea," said Jason Daniluk, parent of a seven and 12-year-old. "You know, we all trust our children. We want to believe what they tell us is the truth, that they're not (using drugs), but some cases they're actually using."

Does a positive test mean that you found drugs of abuse?
No. Take no serious actions until you get the laboratory's result. Remember that many factors may cause a false positive result in the home test.
Remember that a positive test for a prescription drug does not mean that a person is abusing the drug, because there is no way for the test to indicate acceptable levels compared to abusive levels of prescribed drugs.
If the test results are negative, can you be sure that the person you tested did not abuse drugs?
No. There are several factors that can make the test results negative even though the person is abusing drugs. First, you may have tested for the wrong drugs. Or, you may not have tested the urine when it contained drugs. It takes time for drugs to appear in the urine after a person takes them, and they do not stay in the urine indefinitely; you may have collected the urine too late or too soon. It is also possible that the chemicals in the test went bad because they were stored incorrectly or they passed their expiration date.
If you get a negative test result, but still suspect that someone is abusing drugs, you can test again at a later time. Talk to your doctor if you need more help deciding what steps to take next.
"Are (home drug tests) as reliable as going to a professional lab, a hospital or one of the private agencies downtown? No," said Penrose Hospital Drug and Alcohol Counselor Jim Saunders.
Saunders suggests going to a professional lab for reasons beyond accuracy.
"There is less likelihood that the test can be contaminated and therefore produce a false positive," said Saunders. "It takes the parent out of that adversarial role. If I force you to give me a ‘sample of your finest' as it were and all of a sudden that comes back negative, now we have a trust issue going. It can really effect the entire relationship, sometimes for years to come."
You also want to make sure you're testing for the right drug at the right time. Just because you get a negative, doesn't necessarily mean your suspicion is false.
"Marijuana is the one that stays in the system the longest, the others stay in the system just a matter of days, sometimes 24-to-36 hours," said Saunders. "The window of opportunity, if you will, is very small."

It takes time for drugs to appear in the urine after a person takes them, and they do not stay in the urine indefinitely; you may have collected the urine too late or too soon. It is also possible that the chemicals in the test went bad because they were stored incorrectly or they passed their expiration date.

If you get a negative test result, but still suspect that someone is abusing drugs, you can test again at a later time. Talk to your doctor if you need more help deciding what steps to take next.

"Are (home drug tests) as reliable as going to a professional lab, a hospital or one of the private agencies downtown? No," said Penrose Hospital Drug and Alcohol Counselor Jim Saunders.

Saunders suggests going to a professional lab for reasons beyond accuracy.

"There is less likelihood that the test can be contaminated and therefore produce a false positive," said Saunders. "It takes the parent out of that adversarial role. If I force you to give me a ‘sample of your finest' as it were and all of a sudden that comes back negative, now we have a trust issue going. It can really effect the entire relationship, sometimes for years to come."

You also want to make sure you're testing for the right drug at the right time. Just because you get a negative, doesn't necessarily mean your suspicion is false.

"Marijuana is the one that stays in the system the longest, the others stay in the system just a matter of days, sometimes 24-to-36 hours," said Saunders. "The window of opportunity, if you will, is very small."

This information would also be included with any water testing kits delivered by the City. If customers cannot find this information, then the water testing bottle kits were not delivered by the City and would not be part of any official City water testing project.

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, it is hoped the report, involving two University of Glasgow experts, will inform guidelines on cholesterol testing in the UK.

Cholesterol tests are used as a key part of assessing a patient's risk of cardiovascular problems. Fasting has been recommended as it had been thought the body needed enough time to digest food in the system and to clear any fatty particles from the blood. This was in order to produce an accurate reading of so-called "bad" cholesterol - or low-density lipoprotein(LDL).

However, Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine and Chris Packard, an Honorary Professor in Developmental Medicine, both of Glasgow, together with researchers from the University of Cambridge, found that test results were just as accurate without fasting.

"After analysing data from 300,000 patients, the results were just as accurate if the patient had eaten before the test," said Professor Sattar.

Lead researcher John Danesh, Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the University of Cambridge, continued: "For decades, people have been asked to fast overnight before their cholesterol tests. Our findings indicate that cholesterol measurements are at least as good - and probably somewhat better - when made without fasting."

The study also adds to the ongoing controversy over whether testing for blood proteins called apolipoproteins is a more reliable way of predicting heart risk than cholesterol testing.

"The studies showed that analysing "good" cholesterol - or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in conjunction with LDL was just as informative as testing for apolipoproteins AI and B. Furthermore our paper shows that once "bad" cholesterol and "good" HDL-cholesterol are known, using the levels of triglycerides or fat in the blood, as a means to predict the risk of heart disease, is unhelpful," said Professor Sattar.

Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director of the British Heart Foundation, which funded the study, said: "Given the pressure the NHS is under, it is good news that doctors don't need to spend money on setting up more sophisticated tests based on apolipoproteins. But the study underlines the importance of all GPs being able to measure HDL cholesterol as well as totalcholesterol, in order to make the best predictions about heart disease risk."

Cardiovascular disease is the leading form of death in the UK and many other parts of the world.

Quest Diagnostics has released the details of a testing study that shows for the first half of 2009:

Three of every 1,000 urine tests performed on job applicants and employees showed up positive for cocaine, while hair testing showed cocaine use in 32 of 1,000 samples.
For every methamphetamine, 1,000 urine sample resulted in one positive test, while the same number of hair samples resulted in nine positives.

Quest’s reason for the higher number of hair-tests positives: Hair samples tend to show drug use going back further than urine samples — typically 90 days vs. one to three days.

The study also calls into question the size of the reported drop in drug use the last several years. For instance, urine tests show cocaine use is down 57% since 2005, but hair tests show only a 36% drop. For methamphetamines, urine tests show a decline of 64% for that same period, but hair tests show only a 55% drop.

Hair tests cost about twice as much as typical urine tests, Quest, notes.

When Kate Sweeney worked in a medical clinic, she would occasionally have a pharmacists refuse to fill a prescription out of concern that the patient was abusing his medication. Today, several years later, the problem of prescription drug abuse has gotten worse.

Sweeney wrote about rising rates of prescription drug abuse in the Nov. 11 edition of the Lake County (Calif.) Record-Bee:

Prescription drug abuse is not a small problem in the United States. Not only do adults abuse controlled substances, but so do middle school and high school students.
"In 2008, 15.2 million Americans age 12 and older had taken a prescription pain reliever, tranquilizer, stimulant, or sedative for nonmedical purposes at least once in the year prior to being surveyed," according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse-funded 2008 Monitoring the Future Study showed that 2.9 percent of eighth-graders, 6.7 percent of 10th-graders, and 9.7 percent of 12th-graders had abused Vicodin and 2.1 percent of eighth-graders, 3.6 percent of 10th-graders, and 4.7 percent of 12th-graders had abused OxyContin for nonmedical purposes at least once in the year prior to being surveyed.

How Do Oral Drug Tests Work?

Oral drug tests use a swab of saliva taken from the test subject's mouth as a sample to test for the presence of drugs. Because they are simple to adminster and much more diffcult to falsify than some other methods of drug testing such as urine analysis, oral drug tests are becoming very popular.

This is especially true for employers. schools, the military and law enforcement. Reasons for testing can include pre-employment testing, on the job randomized testing, post-incident testing where drugs could be a factor, reasonable suspicion cases where behavior indicates a potential problem, and return-to-duty testing.

Random testing is the most effective type of drug testing because a random test gives the test subject little time or opportunity to evade the test procedure. Saliva based tests are perfect for random drug testing. They are quick, easy to administer, and not as invasive as other methods of testing that require urine, blood or hair sampling.

The results of oral drug tests are very close to those of drug tests performed with blood samples without the need for painful procedures. It is especially useful in the discovery of very recent drug use (on the job for example) and in situations where you want to know what the degree of intoxication is (at the scene of a car accident for example).

Top Ten Signs that your Teen is Using Drugs

1. Academic performance is often a key indication of behavior changes including drug use. A drop in grades is always a clue to something. It may not be drugs but when combined with other signs, the evidence can mount.

2. Sudden changes in behavior such as increasing rudeness or sulleness. This can be normal for many teenagers looking to express their independence but it can be one more indicator of drug use.

3. Are they hanging out with the wrong sort of friends? Studies have shown that the most important influence in a teenager's life is not his parents or his teachers. The most important factor is their peers. If your teen's friends are suddenly more moody or rebellious, or if new, inappropriate friends suddenly appear, take note.

4. Your teenager's extreme interest in their favorite activity suddenly disappears. You need to be aware that a drug habit may be their newest hobby.

5. Mood swings are part of adolescence but if they are particularily severe, more than just hormones may be involved. The cycles of dependence and withdrawal can provoke drastic mood changes.

6. Drugs cost money. If they are always asking for more allowance or extra funds for special school events, it's possible they are using the money to buy drugs. However, you also need to be aware of the opposite situation. Often, a drug user will support their habit by selling drugs. If you notice that your teen has a lot a cash, or seems to be living in a style that can't be supported by his part time job at Burger King, be suspicious.

7. Drug use is often accompanied by physical symptoms that the user will try to hide from their parents. Dilated pupils and blood shot eyes are indicators of drug use. Your teen may take to wearing sunglasses inside to hide these effects. Don't let them get away with it. If necessary, explain to them that wearing sunglasses indoors can

harm their vision. Then look them straight in the eye.

8. Smells like teen spirit? Maybe. But drugs like pot, tobacco and alcohol have distinctive odors that you need to be aware of. Sometimes your teen will try to cover up these scents with mints, and perfumes. Of course, sometimes they have simply fallen for the tv commercials for AXE cologne. Tell them you're allergic so you can see what they really smell like.

9. Do you know where your kids are tonight? Teens need to express their independence. It's natural for them to spend more time away from home. But it's your job as a parent to know where they are. If they are relectant to say where they are going or where they have been, this is not a good sign. Don't accept their arguments that they need their privacy. You are still responsible for them. Arrange a trade-off: they can go out, if you can confirm where they are going. It will never be perfect, but at least you've drawn a line in the sand.

10. You know they are using drugs but just haven't been able to admit it to yourself. Look at the previous nine indicators of teen drug use. If your teen is showing more than five, you know you've got a problem. It may not be

drugs, but you have some serious issues to discuss with your teenager.

Communication is the key but sometimes you will need confirmation that there is a drug abuse problem. The first study of women’s health on a global scale has pointed to AIDS as the leading cause of death and disease among women between the ages of 15 and 44. This information was released by the World Health Organization in a 91-page report.

The leading culprit behind this finding, especially among developing countries, was reportedly determined as unsafe sex; for others, lack of access to contraceptives as well as iron deficiency were also found to be risk factors. In some countries, women either do not have sufficient knowledge on how to protect themselves or have difficulty doing so due to cultural barriers or lack of resources.

Women who face these circumstances also face higher risk of death or disease. On a global scale, one in five women die due to reasons that can be traced back to unsafe sex.

The report is reportedly an attempt to bring to light the plight of women across the globe who experience unequal health treatment by virtue of the fact that they are who they are – women. There are places where this discrimination happens from infancy through adolescence and adulthood, all the way through to old age.

Dr. Margaret Chan, Chief of the World Health Organization, indicated that biologically speaking, women ought to have the upper hand when it comes to longevity as they are predisposed to live at least six years longer than men. They lose this biological advantage in some parts of the world, however, where women live in poverty, lack sufficient access to health care and live in a culture where their well-being takes a back seat to that of men.

Dr. Chan was also quick to note that the improvement of women’s health on the global perspective will only see improvement if their status in some countries that still do not give them equal rights are improved.

Few parents understand what a widespread problem drugs are among adolescents or just how deadly and dangerous the drugs they can get are. Living in the suburbs doesn’t exclude these teens from trying and becoming addicted to heavier drugs like heroin. In the fact the high stress, highly competitive environment may encourage substance abuse which can escalate into serious addiction very quickly. Among teenagers in the region of Nassau County in the state of New York 25 overdosed on heroine in the first 6 months of 2009, in 2008 46 overdosed on the same drug and 2007 27 perished from overdose. Where once drug raids netted hundreds of bags of heroine now they retrieve thousands.

These kids aren’t from impoverished homes or seemingly at risk for developing addiction, many are in their teens and twenties (often hone roll students) and the rate of those who abuse the drug are rising over time. The age of use is dripping as the rate of young users rises and the cost of buying heroine lowers. Currently a bag of the drug that provides a 6-8 hour high can be bought for roughly $5-$25 which is a vast difference for the same amount of cocaine which costs $40-$60 for just a 30 minute high. Even prescription medications like OxyContin are much more expensive and cost roughly $40 per pill on the street. It’s actually cheaper and easier to get than alcohol. The worry of this kind of use only grows worse when you consider the much stronger dose of today’s heroin over that of the 1970s and the fact that these kids see the thrill of barely escaping death part of the high.

Overdose numbers have already prompted education programs about the dangers of heroin for 8^th graders but the level of abuse remains high. The only real way these numbers are going to drop is if parents stop looking away from their children’s problems and instead make steps to help resolve them.

It seems to me that the problem isn’t with the reliability of the home drug test. All home drug testing kits are very accurate. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t ways for the drug user to invalidate the test. Just like with computers, it’s a case of “Garbage In, Garbage Out”.

In recent years, drug testing has become an increasingly popular way for parents to find out if their kids are using drugs. However, Sharon Levy, an assistant profession at Harvard Medical School, says the test can be inaccurate.

“In 2001, her group started researching the reliability of these tests. In their most recent study, published in the April issue of Pediatrics, 12 percent of the teenagers in their [substance abuse] program who took tests for drugs such as marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, benzodiazepines, and opiates had an initial false result.”

Diluted samples are the most common cause for an inaccurate drug test. It seems to be a well-known fact that drinking lots of water before a drug test dilutes the sample enough to affect the test results. Some tests also come back with a false positive result, because the person is taking over-the-counter or prescribed medication. Read more at USNews.com.

As hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries have opened this year in a startling rollout across California, unnerved local officials have started to push back aggressively.
Many cities and a few counties have banned them. Others have imposed emergency moratoriums. And some have started to sue dispensaries to force them to close. So far, the state's courts have sided with local officials.
For marijuana advocates, who have seen over-the-counter sales become commonplace and watched the steady drift of California's vibrant weed counterculture into the mainstream, these setbacks are a discordant development.

And finally, you may not need the test at all. Some tests are really cheap, and won't give you enough information to really make an informed decision.
